The XXII Issue Day Diary
Business, Growth and Environment

By Bob Pearsall and Sally Jackson

November 18th was brisk and chilly. The warmth of the NAU-Yavapai building where we met in Prescott Valley was appreciated.

Once we settled into our seats a few shadowing reports were given including Yavapai County Juvenile Detention Center, Habitat for Humanity, Central Yavapai Fire District and the YMCA. In a couple of cases the PAL member stepped up to volunteer with the organization for additional involvement...just like true leaders!

After the reports we jumped right in to a whirl wind of information beginning with a seemingly perfect comparison of ecology in the Rain Forest to the current economic condition in our world today. Peter Sherman, an ecologist with Prescott College, gave a viable assessment of the two seemingly very different systems to show how much they are, in fact, similar. He began and ended his presentation with an Albert Einstein quote: "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." Peter also challenged the group to think of a single change each of us could make to make our operation and world more sustainable. Additionally, he pointed out that "Nature is a cyclical system; there is no such thing as waste." Each facet serves another whether through birth or death, and unlike the economy, "Nature don't give no bailouts."

From the Rain Forest we jumped to local water issues including supply and challenges throughout Arizona from Greg Kornrumph with Salt River Project. Greg helped us understand the allocation of water from the surface, Colorado River, ground and effluent (recaptured/recycled). Additionally he gave us an overview of the history and interdependence of the water systems in the State today.

Next we moved on to air...and the importance of the Prescott Regional Airport also known as Ernest A. Love Field. Ben Vardiman, the airport manager, provided a history of the field that began in 1926. He went on to explain all of the entities that use it today including Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, United States Forest Service (fire tanker base), National Guard Base, several medical related flight operations (helicopter and fixed wing), law enforcement, cargo/delivery carriers, passenger carriers and private pilots. Ben also shared that the operation has been regionally recognized for their aircraft maintenance services and that the facility is the 38th busiest airport in the nation (out of 500) and 3rd busiest in the State of Arizona (based on number of take-offs and landings). It is clear that the airport is currently, and in the future, an economic engine for Prescott. Ben made a statement driving home the importance of the airport "If you build one mile of road, you can go one mile. If you build one mile of runway, you can go anywhere in the world."

With all the talk of forests, water, air, interdependent systems and economic impact we were hungry by lunchtime! Bob and Fran made arrangements for Wildflower Bread Company box lunches to be delivered. Once we were refueled, we continued our journey with Ab Jackson, Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce and excellent motivational speaker. With Ab's help we learned a new model (DARE) and perspective to deal with difficult people...including more about our personal reaction to them and options for that aspect. Ab stated "Feedback is the breakfast of champions." Helping people to drop their guard and be more receptive to two-way communication is one of the keys to problem resolution. Ab passed on a useful tidbit of information to the group, "You can get everything you want if you give the other person everything they want."

Dr. William Black with SCORE gave us an overview of approaches to growing business today. He focused on the importance of up-to-date and accurate business websites and small business in general.

Our information-packed day on Business, Growth and Environment ended on an energetic note with Chris Kuknyo of Patriot Disposal (and City of Prescott Council Member). Some of Chris' life's lessons highlights included:

  • Never underestimate how you affect another person.
  • Feed kids passion and spirit.
  • There is nothing wrong with being successful.
  • Use a simple, clear, repetitive message for the most out of marketing.
  • Treat your employees' right and talk with your people often.
  • The American dream is not entitlement but opportunity.

Our next adventure will take place on Friday, December 9th with the focus on Education under the direction of Sally and Joe.
